Back to the future at EE Times-UPDATE

Just as I was posting this morning on more changes at EE Times, the press release moved to clarify the word on the street.
Here’s the scoop: Richard Wallace, who ran EE Times as editor in chief in the 1990s, is taking the editorial lead at TechInsights: Vice President/Editor-in-Chief of TechInsights. In this role, according to the release,

“…he will be responsible for driving TechInsights’ new content strategy, and combining the world’s largest and best electronics market editorial and content teams into a cohesive, focused unit delivering news and technical information to global audiences through print, events and digital media.”

Reporting to him will be: Junko Yoshida, Editor-in-Chief of EE Times; Patrick Mannion, Editorial Director of TechOnline; Richard Nass, Editorial Director of Embedded Systems print and online operations; and Peter Clarke, EE Times Europe News Director.
This is a change from a memo in June that indicated Junko was moving from the EIC’s chair to focus on international reporting.
Wallace wrote me this morning to say:

“Most of the industry sees the editor in chief as the person who makes up the front page –now front cover—of EE Times for Monday morning. We have a great team in place under Junko doing that now, and no change is contemplated in that set up in the immediate future. What will happen is that more and more of our effort will be focused ONLINE, with an increasing emphasis on strengthening eetimes.com as the industry’s premier destination for engineering content. EE Times will bark louder and bite harder … and this will happen by focusing more and more of our editorial and content resources – under my direction— online –not just for news but across our online franchises in the technical information and education segments of the market.”

Regardless of the mixed messages coming from outbound communications, it’s good news that Junko remains in that role, good for Times and good for the industry. She and the team have done a great job of morphing into magazine land (see this week’s cover “Lunar Lessons” by George Leopold, a great piece), and they continue to “crash the boards,” they say in basketball, online.
Wallace and Co.’s challenge is significant, but I remain of the mind (maybe an old-fashioned one at this point) that important stories told well still hold value for a community.

    This is great news as far as I’m concerned. Rich and Paul really seem to “get” new media and rather than complain how social media isn’t “real” journalism, they are finding out how to make it real.

    One important thing to remember is that Rich was running the paper when the commercial Internet emerged in 1994 with Netscape. He recognized it for what it could be, even then. He disappeared for a month effectively and spent every day just trolling the young Web getting a sense for what was working, what wasn’t and what could be.
    That said, Rich and Paul could be Saints Peter and Paul and it won’t matter until industry marketers get it. There’s evidence that they are.
