Gone fishin’

At least once a year, I take a digital sabbatical, as Tom Mahon calls it. I’m headed into the hills for a week. No electricity. No cell reception. Sleep on the ground under the stars. Amen.

Ah, I envy you! I’ll be doing the same in early September with a camping trip in the wilds of northeastern Oregon. No people, no laptop, no cell phone. Just elk, cougars, and cattle.

Here’s a great idea for unplugging in the wilderness: ask for change at Soda Creek. There are these boxy things in little plastic booths just outside the store. The boxy things have little slots that you drop your change in. Then you put those awkward handle-y things up to your face. You listen in one end and talk into another. There are little buttons that, if you push them in the right sequence, will make familiar voices appear out of thin air. And you can talk to people who might, oh, I don’t know, wonder if you’re still alive. I know, it sounds almost middle-ages, but people find they really work! Oh, and welcome back to digit-ilization. Didn’t you miss this?
