Five ways to build a great media outlet

Posted on | June 22, 2008 | No Comments

1. Don’t buy a printing press.
2. Stay offline unless you’re posting/publishing your scoops.
3. Don’t use email more than once a day, and even then, make it brief.
4. Don’t spend any time reading analysts’ reports.
5. PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE. CALL AS MANY PEOPLE AN HOUR AS YOU CAN AND TALK TO THEM. DO THIS ALL DAY LONG. IF YOU HIT 4-5 PEOPLE AN HOUR, AFTER SEVEN HOURS YOU’LL HAVE TALKED TO ABOUT 30 PEOPLE. AT LEAST A HANDFUL WILL HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. WRITE IT UP AND POST IT. NO ONE ELSE WILL HAVE THIS INFORMATION. ANYWHERE.

Original non-mash-up material based on face to face interaction. How fascinating. How retro! How quaint! I love it.

Hell Brian, that sounds like some training course I was on 20-odd years ago. Obviously, I’ve come on a long way since then, eh.
