Gisele Bundchen, wine and media maturation

Posted on | February 16, 2008 | No Comments

It’s all starting to come together for me. We’ve written (all of us) about how the media (old and new) are evolving. We all have our pet theories and time will tell of course. But the value of each reinforced itself this morning as i read Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher’s Wine Notes column in the Wall Street Journal. They’d picked up some blogosphere chatter about New England Patriots QB Tom Brady’s girlfriend–the model Gisele Bundchen–sipping wine at the Super Bowl. That’s an astonishing thing in beer’s back yard.
My point is the blogosphere did what it’s supposed to do: pick up on something little and report it. Gaiter and Brecher did what old journalism is supposed, made a great story out of it.
What wine was she drinking and what stemware was she using?? They did some good old-fashioned reporting to estimate that it was a Gallo Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005. It’s a great read and could only have come from professionals paid to tell the bigger story.
Now whether the information model continues to value that kind of reportage (paying people to spend time digging for stories) remains to be seen.
