More on Sam "F*** You" Zell

Posted on | February 8, 2008 | No Comments

The New York Observer quotes a source who offers more detail on Sam Zell’s meeting with the L.A. Times staff. He slammed ex-editor Jim O’Shea and said he’d be willing to take a 50-cent salary. I can only imagine the shiver that puts through the necks of B:B publishers everywhere.
He did tell a reporter, who asked a question and then turned her back on him, to F Off, but The Observer source there was good vibe in the room.

A 50-cent salary is easy for an international investor like Zell to talk about.

I was just reading a book about the “Gilded Youth,” which was a gang of rich, dissolute thugs that liked to beat up the homeless poor and the sans-culottes during the crazy Thermidor period between the French Revolution’s Terror and Napoleon’s coup. The Gilded Youth, much more so than Marie Antoinette, were the ones who were telling the other rungs of society to go eat cake. Basically, they got hired and used by middle-class economic actors who wanted to cut the link between the poor and the crazy revolutionaries around Robespierre, and they did it by making it fashionable to beat the shit out of poor people.

I see a Zell analogy here, not because journalists are poor and downtrodden, but because Zell is encouraging others to laugh at people with values — if they want to keep their jobs. Fuck Sam Zell. I’d shit all over him, just like the Gilded Youth shat all over statues of Paul Marat.
