Columbia’s Bollinger suggests government bail out press

Stupider ideas have been put forth. Maybe.
Steve Boriss at The Future of News amplifies the chatter coming out of Davos that Lee Bollinger, President of Columbia University, which has the nation’s premier J-School, suggests that the government step in to help struggling old media. Arrington’s on the case too. This is the same Lee Bollinger who gave a public platform to Iranian Presidential Hatemonger Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Is he fit to run an American university?
Yeah, sure, colleges are idea incubators, but, geez, Lee, dust off the U.S. Constitution and re-read the First Amendment for God’s sake.

… not to mention the concepts of a free market. The press has to learn, like any business, that it needs to find it’s value proposition to attract readership and advertising. We are spending way too much time bemoaning the way it no longer is and start figuring out how to make a profit while still holding onto time honored values… without a handout.
Back in the first century were a group of Christians who sat the marketplace in Thessalonica asking for handouts. They were there because they believed Jesus was coming back anytime and it just didn’t make sense to have a job or homes. Paul wrote to them in his second letter saying, “you don’t workm you don’t eat.”
The way it was is never going to happen again, There will be no more newsprint to write on, or typewriters, or linotypes. Let’s figure out a way to be valuable again and not take our position in society for granted anymore.

Of course, in some circles, government intervention is always the answer to our problems.

I would have to say that I’m always a “laissez-faire” type of person when it comes to government involvement in private sectors. You don’t want to start taking handouts from the government unless you feel like giving something in return.
