Support the writers: ignore the Oscars
Posted on | January 22, 2008 | No Comments
This morning we edged closer to the precipice of Hollywood glory as the Oscar nominations were announced. While I would dearly miss Mike and Suz Lipman’s annual Oscar-night bash at their pad, I’ll take one for the team if that’s what it takes to help the writers union win this battle. Ben Widdicombe, in the New York Daily News, writes today that writers are hoping that huge advertisers like Unilever and L’Oreal will come to their defense to pressure a settlement before the Oscars:
“The tremors are already being felt by the country’s big ad agencies, who don’t know whether to spend millions to create custom client spots that will not be seen if ABC’s Feb. 24 broadcast does not go forward.”
The Hollywood Reporter notes that CBS has killed 20 projects because of the strike. That’s a start. Hopefully someone’s starting to pay attention in HollywoodLand.
Look, the option isn’t reality shows forever. They get old very quickly and contribute mightily to the American culture of narcissism. Here’s hoping mega-advertisers understand the value of good content in building audiences for their brands.
