I miss Nixon

My wife called out this New York Times photo because of the look on Bush’s face during this morning’s economic-stimulus press conference (with Mr. Happy behind him). What’s worse was the video of the news conference, which I watched during my morning workout. Bush looked like his mother died. He was listless, which really screwed up the message that “hey we’re the government and we’re here to help as the economic sky is falling.”

Aw, c’mon, in this case give Bush a break, there’s no happy way to say, “We’re all really fucked now.” And if some president tried to sugar-coat it by exuding confidence, you’d rag at him/her for insincerity. Your own New Year list said it, 2008 is a recession, most stimulus packages won’t work, we should all just hand fiscal control to the Chinese and Saudis and be happy indentured servants.

I wasn’t looking for a happy face. Not even a confident one. I just wish he didn’t look so utterly shocked. Shocked! How can he be so shocked? Unless he wasn’t paying attention. Which supports my theory that this guy isn’t ever running the country, he’s just visiting.
