CMP CEO could be named soon; Weitzner reorgs ZDE

Posted on | January 17, 2008 | No Comments

Word is that CMP Media will name a new CEO the second week of February to replace Steve Weitzner, who was moved aside in a management shuffle and then left last week for competitor Ziff Davis Enterprise. It appears that most of the higher-ups have their hats in the ring. That would be Phil Chapnick who runs the Game group, Paul Miller in electronics, Bob Faletra in Channel and Tony Uphoff in the Business Technology Group. Gary Hughes, who runs CMPi, United Business Media’s European B:B play, has made the internal rumor mill as well. No rumors on whether any outsiders have made a short list.

One theory has Uphoff in a pretty strong position for the job if he wants it. I had initially thought that because Weitzner brought him in that that might not play to his advantage, but there’s an interesting story behind it all. Some time ago Weitzner cast about for someone to run BTG, and Jeff Patterson, former EE Times publisher who was overseeing corporate sales, threw his hat in the ring. Weitzner had been interested in bringing in Uphoff, but the feeling wasn’t mutual. Patterson appeared to have the BTG job at that point. That was until Uphoff called Weitzner and said he changed his mind. That left Patterson standing when the music stopped. He’s now CEO of O’Reilly’s Safari Books arm up in apple-filled, nuclear-free Sebastopol, Calif. Turns out that in that time, Uphoff went to London to talk about the gig with David Levin, UBM’s CEO. Levin loved him. The rest is history.

Still, if this were such a slam-dunk theory, you’d think Uphoff would have the job by now. We shall see, obviously.

Meanwhile, Weitzner’s reorganizing ZDE, and, no, he hasn’t brought a bunch of CMP immigrants with him.

Tony Uphoff is telling his friends both inside and outside of the company he has the job. At the same time much of the company’s top talent are openly talking to each other about getting out if he gets the nod. Interesting to watch this unfold. We could see a mass exodus of talent.
