Steve Weitzner, Tomb Raider?

Media Wire Daily posts an interesting take on Steve Weitzner’s departure from CMP to Ziff Davis Enterprise. It posits that Weitzner had no contract at CMP and therefore could poach a lot of talent from CMP. One big thing wrong with that: A lot of talent has already left CMP, either willingly or not. The intimation that a flood of ex-CMPers into ZDE will save the day is misguided as well. The problem in B:B publishing isn’t isolated at CMP. It’s a sea change in the business. That said, Weitzner made be able to do some better open-field running at ZDE than at CMP, where cost-cutting was constant.
Weitzner told Folio it was time to go.

“I had a long and rewarding run at CMP, but it was time for a change.”

Wow, THAT sounds familiar. Folio also suggests Weitzner wasn’t treated the way a CEO should have been treated, that his separation agreement was similar to what you’d give a junior editor just laid off.

“Every company has every right to replace a CEO, but do it in a classy way. Do it in a way that preserves the integrity of the office,” a source told Folio.

We’ll get the full story at some point. I reached out to Steve after the news broke last week and haven’t heard back but I’ll catch him eventually. Until then, CMP’s CEO search goes on and its reputation seems to be taking a bit of a hit. Funny how in the old days CMP was seen as the Cadillac place to work in B:B publishing and Ziff was the snake pit.
