Heading toward the holiday finish line

BOSTON–Nothing like snowy New England to put you in the Christmas mood. Airport delays, traffic delays (a colleage here at Blanc & Otus, Brandon Keough, took four hours during the storm last week to make his 30 minute commute). But I’m staying in Back Bay tonight, having dinner with Mike and Patty Spataro and generally starting to soak up the Christmas spirit and keep my ears warm.
What I can’t wait for is not football bowl games but the utter frenzy of the political trail in the next two weeks. Everyday, it’s something new. I subscribe to about 10 political blogs and that’s less than one-tenth of 1 percent of all political blogs right? Today it’s Mitt Romney who’s the “liar-liar, pants-on-fire” target. Dan Henninger hit the nail on the head in his WonderLand column in the WSJ yesterday: rip somebody a new one and then “apologize.”
So here’s where we stand in the homestretch to Iowa and New Hampshire. We’re avidly watching two states with predominantly white voters who have are so isolated from reality it’s not funny. And yet they’ll call the tune for the SuperDuperTuesday primaries in February. Please tell me why California, New York and Texas aren’t the defacto first three primary states every presidential season? (OK, so that’s the closet fascist in me).
Hillary’s star is falling, Huckabee is putting secret crosses behind him in ads and sneaking in Jesus, Obama has no experience, McCain can’t help but self-destruct, Romney’s a Mormon, Ron Paul is intriguing but un-electable, Richardson, Edwards, Popeye and Bluto struggle in the wings.
Is this what it’s come to in America? Every four years a series of lesser-of-two-evils. Man. That’s not my America, but then again we devote more TV time to the Spears sisters than we do to real issues.
Heidi’s triple-doople-strong eggnog can’t come a minute too soon.
