Finally fixing LinkedIn

LinkedIn, the social-networking site for professionals, finally seems to be getting its act together after being schooled by MySpace and Facebook over the past couple of years. The site today rolled out new features and a redesigned home page. The proof will be in the pudding, and I have yet to play around with it. But it’s a step in the right direction. I put LinkedIn on the back burner earlier this year when it appeared nothing much was coming out of R&D. Facebook was interesting, vibrant and changing with its open API announcement in the spring. But Facebook has stumbled and staggered badly in the past two weeks with its Beacon ad-tracking feature and it’s awful lack of response to criticism about the program. It got so bad before FB CEO Mark Zuckerberg came out of his silence that Robert Scoble got angry.
LinkedIn was becoming to me just a duplicate of my email address books with no social-networking features that were really compelling. Now change is a comin’, apparently.
So LinkedIn is on the Open Social bandwagon and that’s probably not a bad place to be.
Hopefully I’ll have a chance to do some more digging on this soon.

Hey B,
Anne Zelenka over at GigaOm has a less rosy assessment of the LinkedIn changes. (http://gigaom.com/2007/12/10/linkedin-needs-to-reachout/) Not a total slam but I thought she had some good points. Wouldn’t mind your take on what she has to say.
