Online Real Estate Ad Revenue to Eclipse Newspapers by 2012

Editor & Publisher reports this week more dire news for local newspapers.
Today ad spending on real estate is down 3 percent for the year but accelerated 24 percent in the third quarter (mortgage meltdown, no doubt). Despite the dire news, dire headlines and breathless anticipation of Armageddon, it’s not all bad. What’s missing from these stories is that a lot of the print real estate advertising that’s moving online is moving to the newspaper sites.

The study nods to the very recent announcement of 11 newspaper companies partnering with in addition to the Yahoo consortium, which could help more real estate ad dollars flow to the newspapers.

We know the situation is tough for newspapers but why not angle it a bit differently?
The bigger problem is the collapse of the housing market. That one is going to continue to sting for the foreseeable future.

    To empahsize your point – Business Week had a factoid in the latest issue that blew me away:
    Total newspaper print advertising in 2006 was $47 billion, down 2% form ’05.
    Total online advertising was up 27% to $20 billion.

    The day of parity is almost here.
