I still see a blog as serving its best function when it points to something else, when it cajoles, when it makes a quick comment (though microblogs of the Twitter variety annoy me to no end). Blog posts can have truly "newsy" elements to them, but I see blog posts as less than optimal places to break news. Because sites like Techcrunch and GigaOM are structured as blogs, they bore me - if they looked more like Light Reading or CNET, they might be more appealing. By contrast, something like Valleywag is interesting because it's bright, colorful, sardonic, and annoying. Maybe by segregating ideal blog characteristics from ideal online news characteristics I'm being old school, but the blurring of those distinctions makes for over-busy reporters and less than interesting blogs. One of the attributes of the dot boom was that the amount of available content was outstripped by the demand for content. That's where we all got the idea that a journalist would run any release we sent to them.<br/><br/>Blogging and social media is starting to set up the same scenario. There is more media capacity then there is content, much less information, to fill it.<br/><br/>:ast week I was talking to an editor who stated flatly, "I have so many things to write for that if I want to do any real reporting, I have to work overtime."<br/><br/>We are at a crucial moment for media and I will be commenting on it this week.
