Weitzner moves aside as CMP CEO

It was only a matter of time, but Steve Weitzner, one of the brightest minds in the publishing world, has become a casualty of the media chaos. BtoB is reporting today that he stepped aside as CEO of CMP Media LLC to run the company’s international business development.
It was only a matter of time because the upheaval in publishing is so immense that even its smartest people get rolled. Weitzner’s boss, David Levin, is a bright guy too, but since he came on board as UBM‘s CEO a couple of years ago, made it clear that CMP had to fix its problems or else. Unfortunately, there’s little that B:B publishers can do these days but cut and cut and cut and find more efficiencies. In part, they’re not making the move to online very well, but their customers aren’t either. Or the smarter ones are simply saying “screw you” I’ll become the messenger myself. While that’s something that companies must come to grips with, they shouldn’t be doing it at the expense of their traditional publishing partners.
Weitzner was actively moving CMP from a pure-play publishing house to a marketing-solutions company. Often in business you play the cards dealt you, and that’s precisely what Weitzner was trying to do. But marketing-solutions companies abound; they’re called advertising and PR firms. But what CMP was/is trying to do was bring the content-creation piece of the puzzle to the party, where advertising and PR doesn’t (for the most part).
There’s more to this story, for sure. But that’s what we know now. Who’s next in line? Who knows.
Full disclosure: Weitzner hired me at EE Times 15 years ago and I learned countless things just from watching him from afar. He really is the brightest guy in the B:B game and a class act to boot. Sometimes the strongest guys get swept away in a flood tide, though.

Not sure this is a bad thing, Brian. When Steve left the editorial side, EE Times rocketed to first place in the trades. CMP over all is in great financial shape.
But the world needs global communications. And if Steve takes his visionary skills to CMP’s international business, it should leave some regional publisher shaking in their boots.

EET was either in first by the time Steve was promoted to publisher, or was already in the process of rocketing there.
Having worked for the guy, I’m only too happy to back up Brian’s assessment that Weitzner is one of the sharpest guys in the business.
In over 20 years I’ve met only two journalists who could recall in what archived issue any given story had run in. Steve was one of them. It’s an uncanny talent.

Late to the Steve news and feel the need to back him up here to. Before he convinced me to join EE Times (he was already publisher I think), I had competed against him. Rest assured, Lou, EE Times became #1 on Steve’s watch. Frank and Girish definitely had important roles, but Steve’s leadership made it happen.

At EE Times, we all stood on the shoulders of Steve and Girish, who stood on the shoulders of Burge and everyone before them.
Wallace doesn’t exist without Weitzner; I don’t exist without Wallace and so on–not on post but on position. Wallace saw the chance to break Electronic News’ back. I built on that and positioned the paper as the industry town square.
It’s all in the natural evolution of a newspaper. Read the history of the New York Times. You’ll see something not dissimilar.
