Monday musings

Loring Wirbel passed along a link to a hilarious diatribe about “Web 2.0″ land. It’s funny to me because some of the thinking in it is reminiscent of things I heard in my prior job.

The current droolfest (reflected in the above post) is about Facebook, which took it on the chin in Saturday’s New York Times. Dartmouth Fresh-out Alicia Mathias is agog because she believes that Facebook isn’t the business tool that people want it to be; it’s an entertainment center of sorts. Point taken. But I don’t think the business-tool crowd is not saying it can’t be entertaining as well. The real point is Facebook’s a great social-networking site now that has huge upside after opening up its APIs to developers. The kids may roll onto something else and that’s OK. They’ve done it already. When they were in high school, they couldn’t wait to get off MySpace and into Facebook where the “big kids” hang out.
Scott Karp and a bunch of others weigh in pro and con.
The annoying part of the dialogue is how dismissive many people can be about adults diving into the waters. What the hell else are they supposed to do?

Newsvine got hitched to MSNBC over the weekend. Here’s hoping it evolves into something more than a Las Vegas wedding. I like Newsvine a lot and have not spent as much time on it each day as I should.

Last but not least, Ex-CMPers have created a social-networking site on Ning. All I can say is damned if there aren’t hundreds of us in the “ex” category! If you’re an ex, join up. It’s a good place to commiserate and network.

I have my doubts about Facebook’s earning power. Everyone claims that Facebook is worth $X billions of dollars but one has really figured out how to make money off of it. In my personal opinion, Microsoft would do better to leave it alone, otherwise it’s going to be another Google struggling to make money off of a big time acquisition. On that note, the Cowboys are awesome, but I am humbled by the mere sight of the Patriots.

I am humbled by an injured first-string quarterback and a crappy O-line.
