"Panic had set in"

Dean Baquet, fired former editor of the Los Angeles Times, surfaced this week in New York. Quoted in Mediabistro’s FishbowlNY (there was plenty of other coverage too):

“There was a lack of rational thought about the future. Panic had set in. It’s impossible to lead an organization when that happens.”

It’s disturbing, but not new, that some of the most experienced media executives in the land seem to have no freaking idea what to do. Couple Baquet’s thoughts with recent actions at the Times’ parent Tribune Co. and you get this Hamlet-feeling coming out of Chicago? Should we or shouldn’t we? Jesus, boys, make a decision and then get out of the way. Sell the company and stop screwing around.
For Baquet’s part, he’s landed in D.C. with the New York Times, which has its own issues, but certainly not as mind-numbingly bizarre as those at the L.A. Times. (Like the soap opera involving the editorial-page editor).
