Small is big

The S.F. Comical this morning profiles on p. 1 a local muckracker about 3 hours north of the city, Tim Crews. The owner, publisher, editor and reporter of the Sacramento Valley Mirror busts chops, rakes muck and, in his own words, be a shit distruber. He does what newspapers are supposed to do, report the goings on in their world without fear or favor. He’s a big voice in this ag town (Glenn County) and pisses a lotta folks off. He even reports on his own contributors. He is a fabulous writer who tells stark stories.
We should all tip our caps to him, because he, and a countless other small, independent publications across the country are proving that you can still good journalism when all around you are panicking. And if you think about, not even the blogosphere does this well and consistently because at this point, the blogosphere is about the blog, not about covering a community. This will change over time to be sure. It’s a testament to North Bay reporter Peter Fimrite that he sussed out the story and to Comical that it ran the story on the front page of both its print edition and its website.
