Fog City follies

I jump back in at a fortuitous time: This Gavin Newsom affair and booze issues have me fired up. Not only is it a wonderfully salacious story, but it shines a light on the glories of new media. San Francisco is the crucible of Internet 1.0 and Web 2.0 and whatever follows pretty much, so it’s no surprise to see online media driving this story with a ferocity and a typically San Franciscan wit.
Everybody’s weighed in on it. Gavinwatch is clearly the most entertaining of the bloggers on a daily basis and obviously plugged in to local politics . Video, charts, wit, wisdom, edge… it’s all there. Plus a portal unto the world around him or her. One of the more professional and serious-minded (not meant to be a slam, actually) is FogCityJournal.com, founded by former S.F. Sentinel co-owner Luke Thomas. Thomas does great photo journalism and political analysis.
SFist isn’t far behind and then there’s Spots weighing in with Mayor McHooch.
Put it in the context of the L.A. Times memo on its woeful online strategy and execution (that post comes later), and you begin to see how things are evolving. There’s a seriousness in those organizations that virtually prevents any sort of really creative and risky journalism.
Hey, you don’t see the Chickens video at the S. F. Chronicle site, now do you?
