Hear Ye…and Tell Me!

The University of South Carolina (I have to admit when a UCLA guy sees USC in any form, it makes my skin crawl, but I’ll let it slide) has a really fine newsletter on convergence. You can quibble with the title, but that’s not the point.

Today’s is particularly interesting in that the contributors–frontline reporters, all–have very definite views of what’s occuring around them. But in a lot of cases, they’re missing the point. It’s not about types of media per se, new ones displacing old ones. The very nature of information has changed. There’s a popular saying in some parts of our business: the reader knows more than we do.

It’s no longer about media as town criers announcing the news. It’s now a constant conversation between media and audience. Those who ignore that do so at their own peril.
